Maricopa Patient Story
Former patient Mark Nolen presents a personal piece of artwork to Iven Wilson, Chief Nursing Officer at Exceptional Community Hospital – Maricopa, as a heartfelt thank-you for the lifesaving care he received during a recent visit. During a follow-up trip to express his gratitude, Mark noticed the many pieces of local art displayed throughout the hospital. Inspired, he donated his own artwork, which is now proudly on display.

To Marissa, Shannon, Harlan, Esmeralda, Sunshine, Clint Respiratory Technician, Tobe. Of course, the Doctors and Registered Nurses, Radiology Team, ER Nurses, Medical Technicians, Intake Administration, Housekeeping and Food Service.

I am certainly not a word master but I can tell a good story and get a smile. SO. A heartfelt Thank You to each and every one you. Your attention to detail, compassion and caring was overwhelming. On the 28th of June I arrived at the hospital around 4:30am. I was having trouble breathing and did not understand the reason for this condition. My wife brought me to the emergency room along with loads of concern.

We were promptly checked in and moved to the ER. Tobe introduced himself and began putting the IV in place followed by x-rays and eventually a CT scan that gave up the secret to the problem. From that moment forward my recovery was well on its way. So, Tobe is the beginning. Thank you.

I was moved to a room and immediately given medication to relieve the condition. Marissa and Shannon cared for me as I was given verbal instructions along with answers to my questions. At no point in this recovery did I ever feel left out. I always felt cared for and monitored with a sense of belonging. Shannon and Marissa are always one step in the lead. Incredible.

Harlan was focused, deliberate in making decisions. His quiet compassion would surface just long enough to reassure me that all would be fine. That is a comforting feeling. Harlan projected a presence of calmness and reassurance.

Esmeralda is another treasure to this great team of players. She helped me walk and exercise my lung capacity. She is capable of making quiet conversation while keeping a focus on the activity at hand.

Clint, respiratory tech, gave us the idea to start short walks in the hallway, and then explained the position of the lungs. So Esmeralda and I walked several times in the hallway outside of the room. My breathing ability increased, so the anxiety began to go away. I noticed my sleep pattern changed with the exercise.

Sunshine is another incredible Registered Nurse. Great attitude and also has the detailed and routine of being a great nurse. Methodical, with a strong sense of science. Sunshine watched my reactions to determine the condition improvements. She was interested in astronomy as Shannon and Marissa are.

Clint, Respiratory Technician stopped by for a second short visit and was filled with super good pointers about walking, sitting in bed, laying down. Encouraging proper posture was a plus and good exercise. Thank you Clint.

Thanks to each of you. Very delighted and impressed that Exceptional is just a few miles from my house. I just have one regret. I did not get the name of the lady that liked the three-legged chicken joke. Her smile is addictive and her bubbly personality could fill the halls of Heaven.

Sincerely,

Mark Nolen
